Summary: I chose my topic to be about the labeling theory which is “Howard Becker’s idea that deviance is a consequence of external judgements, or labels that modify the individuals self concept and change the way others respond to the labeled person” I really wanted to talk about this topic because it grabbed my attention. I think labeling people can truly mess with somebody’s head. Saying negative or rude comments repeatedly to people can make them change the way they view themselves and honestly believe what people call them. They will believe this because, they will think that it is what everyone else already thinks of them. Labeling theory can go in many but I think it is a huge problem in the school system I believe that is where it all starts. Kids can be self conscious at that age and try to put others down to make them feel better.
Compare: This article is very upsetting but it fits with the labeling theory this 10 year old boy Seven Bridges from Louisville Kentucky was bullied for having a medical condition to wear his anus had no opening due to that he needed a colostomy bag. The bag would sometimes leak and would have a smell this is where the bullying happened. Mean kids would tell him he stunk and this got to him it happened so often his mom promised him he could change schools at the end of the year. Seven did not make it through the school year it s heart breaking to think a 10 year old boy who haven’t been able to live his life yet would cut it short because kids made him change the way he saw him self from a “label”. Now his mother will also has to live the rest of her life after finding her baby boy hung, it’s heartbreaking. After Sevens death he marked the 8th suicide this school year from his school district. I think people need to learn how far labeling can go it can destroy a person or take them to a mental break down it is something people should teach so it hopefully happens less because no 10 year old boy should want to take his own life because somebody drilled in his head that he was an outcast.
