Chapter 14

Compare: For my second blog this week I would like to talk about over population. Overpopulation has been a topic for awhile now that most people don’t like to think or talk about because it’s scary. Most people don’t want to lose their rights on having children or having a limit on the amount of children they can have. Or some people that don’t want to have kids don’t want to be thought of as selfish or childless. Overpopulation is a topic most people don’t even know how to talk about because they don’t understand what the next step would be to prevent it or what it would mean to prevent it. But talking about it is what we need to do other wise we have no plan and it will affect society in a negative way. Once we can’t sustain the population there will have to be an adjustment made.

Summary: this article talks about overpopulation on the earth and explains what that is happening. This stood out to me when they said “My parents were born in 1910 and 1911, when the world population was 1.7 billion. I was born in 1946, when the world population was around 2.5 billion. During my 70-plus years that population has tripled to 7.5 billion and is expected to reach 9.3 billion in the year I would turn 100. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that this growth is out of control and unsustainable.”

I thought it was crazy how fast the population grew once we hit 1.7 billion, and it scares me for my future. As more people are born the more people need food, shelter, and water but how can we provide that at the rate we are using our resources? If the world can only sustain 10 billion people what are we going to do when we hit it and don’t have a plan?
