Chapter 14

Compare: For my second blog this week I would like to talk about over population. Overpopulation has been a topic for awhile now that most people don’t like to think or talk about because it’s scary. Most people don’t want to lose their rights on having children or having a limit on the amount of children they can have. Or some people that don’t want to have kids don’t want to be thought of as selfish or childless. Overpopulation is a topic most people don’t even know how to talk about because they don’t understand what the next step would be to prevent it or what it would mean to prevent it. But talking about it is what we need to do other wise we have no plan and it will affect society in a negative way. Once we can’t sustain the population there will have to be an adjustment made.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsday.com/amp/opinion/commentary/overpopulation-is-an-existential-threat-to-humanity-1.22481029

Summary: this article talks about overpopulation on the earth and explains what that is happening. This stood out to me when they said “My parents were born in 1910 and 1911, when the world population was 1.7 billion. I was born in 1946, when the world population was around 2.5 billion. During my 70-plus years that population has tripled to 7.5 billion and is expected to reach 9.3 billion in the year I would turn 100. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that this growth is out of control and unsustainable.”

I thought it was crazy how fast the population grew once we hit 1.7 billion, and it scares me for my future. As more people are born the more people need food, shelter, and water but how can we provide that at the rate we are using our resources? If the world can only sustain 10 billion people what are we going to do when we hit it and don’t have a plan?

Chapter 13

Compare: This week I chose to talk about ocean pollution and how it affects our society. Most people want it because it’s convenient and accessible but it not biodegradable. This means that it can not be composted like paper or cardboard. It has to be out In a landfill but woth people not taking responsibility of throwing away plastic it’s filling our ocean. “About 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the sea every year, and at this rate we face a future with more plastic in the Ocean than fish by 2050. Our plastic addiction and waste mismanagement is condemning countless marine birds and animals to death by entanglement or poisoning, and even leading to chemical contamination of the fish we eat.”

The fact that by 2050 we will have more plastic then fish in the ocean is terrifying what will that do to our drinking water? Food supply? And animals of the ocean?

https://www.oceanunite.org/issues/marine-plastic-pollution/

Summary: This article shows the facts of plastic In the ocean. They talk about how it is affecting it and how it will soon affect our lives. The article says “The 192 countries with a coast bordering the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, or Mediterranean and Black seas, produced 2.5 billion tonnes of waste in 2010. Of this, an estimated 275 million tonnes was plastic, and 31.9 million tonnes was mismanaged coastal plastic waste. An estimated 8 million tonnes of this plastic waste enters the Ocean every year” they go on by stating ”Global plastics consumption is predicted to grow dramatically, to reach nearly 400 million tonnes a year by 2025” when will people stop? When will the fact that plastic is not eco friendly stop people from using it and polluting our oceans? This is a perfect time for people to switch from styrofoam Togo boxes to cardboard or plastic straws to paper it’s small things that will help our earth recover from the pollution we have brought it.

Chapter 11&12

Compare: For this week’s blog I chose to talk about the second shift. The second shift is all the work women do at their house unpaid once they come home from their job. This includes everything from cooking food, cleaning, driving kids to school, and changing diapers. In this video Melinda talks about the how we need to recognize re evaluate and redistribute these jobs with the men in our life. She points out how it had to be OK with society to take these jobs otherwise it will not change. In the book pg. 270 it also talks about the feminization of poverty “The economic trend showing that women are more likely than men to live in poverty caused by the gender gap in wages the higher proportion of single mothers compared to single fathers and then increasing cost of childcare”. With this Melinda talks about how women are also paid less and usually if there is a single parent it’s a mother and how we need to understand the unpaid work of the second shift in order to help this.

Summary: In this video Melinda talks about how “poverty is sexist” because the majority of poverty is women and a lot of them are single mothers who also take on the second shift unpaid. In this article the study “estimates women do 2.6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do. Childcare, cooking and cleaning, even things like picking kids up from school or taking elderly parents to the doctor — these tasks disproportionately fall to women.” 2.6 is a big number that is a lot of work women are doing with no recognition it’s just expected of them and that’s what needs to change, the attitude of other and what their expectations of women are. In the article Razavi said “If women stopped doing a lot of the work they do unpaid, then the whole economy would collapse,” I think people need to hear that because what would the men do if women took a strike and just stopped cooking and cleaning? They would have to start doing the work and then they would realize how much women do for them.

Chapter 10

Summary: This article shows how religion plays a role in society and how people react to it. It can affect people in negative ways. As this article shows innocent Muslims are blamed for acts of terrorism just because of what they believe in. This is unfair to the people who are not extremist and are practicing the peaceful religion. It’s a stereotype that is unfair and makes people feel uncomfortable with who they are. It also doesn’t help when people tweet “Maybe most [Muslims are] peaceful, but until they recognize and destroy their growing jihadist cancer they must be held responsible,” Rupert Murdoch tweeted after the 2015 terrorist attack in France. This tweet makes people see Muslims are terrorist when the majority are not and it is sad for those who hide their religion afraid of what people might do to them if they know what religion they practice.

Compare: I’m comparing this article to chapter ten. This article shows how religion can play a role in society and how it affects people. Sociologist study how religion affects people and groups of people and I think it’s very important this is shared. My friend who is Muslim does not want people to know because she is afraid what they would think. I believe it would be even harder to let people know In Ellensburg due to the small farming community who may believe Muslims are terririst. But my friend shows how peaceful this religion is and shows that the majority of people who practice it are not extremist. Religion shouldn’t affect people’s lives they should be able to practice there religion in peace but people don’t understand how to see past the bad and focus on the good in the people. This article shows a good point when they said “You wouldn’t blame all white people for the actions of Dylann Roof, who walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina, and killed nine African-American worshippers. You wouldn’t blame all Christians for the meanness of the Westboro Baptist Church.”. I never heard of this till now but If we blame all people who are Muslims for being terrotist how do people not blame people for being extremist in Christianity.

Chapter 9

Compare: For this blog I chose to talk about gender bias within health diagnoses. This is something not talked about very often because people don’t know about it, but it’s very true. Many Women each year are getting overlooked mainly by male doctors and it’s scary. My personal experience wasn’t good when I went to the emergency room. I went in because my heart was racing on and off, I didn’t know why. The first thing they did was test my blood for drugs and my urine to see if I was pregnant everything came back clear after waiting for the test they then hooked me up to the ekg machine to check my heart. After a couple hours they diagnosed me with Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) which causes the top and bottom of my heart to beat at the same time causing my heart to race. It was upsetting when they didn’t believe me and put everything I said to the side and tested me for drugs, most likely because I’m a women and they would think I was over reacting. The only other time I went into the emergency room was when I got the rigors which is uncontrollable shaking due to a high fever spike, they did the same thing and tested to see if I was on drugs or pregnant, once the tests came back clear they tested for the flu which also came back clear and they discharged me with out knowing what caused the fever spike. Both those happened at the Ellensburg hospital.

Summary: This article talks about the gender bias in medical industry. They led with this “Women are more likely to wait longer for a health diagnosis and to be told it’s ‘all in their heads’. That can be lethal: diagnostic errors cause 40,000-80,000 deaths in the US alone.” I absolutely thought that was horrible that these doctors could have saved that many lives if the would of just believed their patient. The article also talks about a recent study done in the United Kingdom that said one in three of the people diagnosed with a brain tumor had talked to a doctor about 5 before they were believed. One lady said she heard an GP make fun of her and say “what does she think she has a brain tumor” the lady then had to schedule appointments with the neurology department before being diagnosed. These are things that can be easily fixed If people would just listen to others, instead of poke fun of and thinking they’re just making it up. I think people need to see the statistics of how many people are lost due to no or late diagnoses

Chapter 8

Article Summary: In this article they are talking about colored women in work areas. They have done research and a surveys asking how they have been treated and their experiences in the work industry. It points out the discrimination against colored women. It makes me wonder why if we all have seem racism, we all know it exists why can’t we stop it? I think more articles like these need to be shared so people can understand the struggle these hardworking women are going through. This article shows a survey study and these were the results: “For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 60 black women are
40% of black women have had their judgment questioned in their area of expertise; 27% of men have
Only 35% of black women said their manager promotes their contributions to others; 46% of men said their manager does
41% of black women said they never have had substantive interaction with a senior leader about their work; just 27% of men said that….according to the U.S. Census bureau, while a full-time working woman earned about 80 cents for every dollar a man did, full-time working black women earned only 67 cents for every dollar.”(Forbes)

Compare: in chapter eight we talked about inequality towards colored women. I’d like to compare this article to our discussion about racism. It is sad to see that colored people are still being mistreated today especially in the work place. These women have worked so hard to get their degree and job and they should be rewarded like everyone else. Gender or race should not be seen when dealing with promotions, pay, or in a job interview. In the work place they should all be seen equal and be able to prove themselves in the job? But If they don’t get the opportunity how will that happen? These women need to be given more credit in what they do in order to get our work place more equal. To fix this problem first we need people to be aware of it, and to see results of surveys like this, to open there eyes and get them to be more equal in the work industry.

Chapter 7

Summary: in this Article talks about a mother Leslie Turner. She is the mother of a 4 month old baby, who she is working to support. She had a ticket from a traffic violation which in Nevada I not paid in time is seen as not appearing in court. Due to this she was arrested in 2016. Leslie’s son was born two months pre-mature and got a condition which cause him to break out in spasms. Leslie had to go back to work in order to keep payments up on her house but with the ticket she missed the date, they told her she had to go to court or turn her self in. Her bail was $1,500.00 and that was more then she earned in a month.

Compare: I wanted to compare this to the poverty subject we went over in chapter seven and the game SPENT. This story stook out to me after playing that game, she had a new born baby she wanted to be home spending time with, but instead she had to go back to work to pay her bills. Leslie had all her bills paid but was behind because of one parking violation. This made me think about how it’s more likely for someone born in the lower/ middle class to grow up in that same class. While looking at this story I feel bad for her because you can see she is a hard working mother but needs a little help or boost to get her back on her feet but instead the police locked her up for days causing her to not be able to see her son and loose time off work. How are people supposed to be taking care of themselves when we pull them down? When we put good hearted working citizens in jail for an innocent crime? Why don’t we help them out and give people like Leslie an option of paying the bill or squeeze in a little community service when she has time so we can help change the odds of being born into low income and being stuck in it as you grow old.

Chapter 5&6

Summary: I chose my topic to be about the labeling theory which is “Howard Becker’s idea that deviance is a consequence of external judgements, or labels that modify the individuals self concept and change the way others respond to the labeled person” I really wanted to talk about this topic because it grabbed my attention. I think labeling people can truly mess with somebody’s head. Saying negative or rude comments repeatedly to people can make them change the way they view themselves and honestly believe what people call them. They will believe this because, they will think that it is what everyone else already thinks of them. Labeling theory can go in many but I think it is a huge problem in the school system I believe that is where it all starts. Kids can be self conscious at that age and try to put others down to make them feel better.

Compare: This article is very upsetting but it fits with the labeling theory this 10 year old boy Seven Bridges from Louisville Kentucky was bullied for having a medical condition to wear his anus had no opening due to that he needed a colostomy bag. The bag would sometimes leak and would have a smell this is where the bullying happened. Mean kids would tell him he stunk and this got to him it happened so often his mom promised him he could change schools at the end of the year. Seven did not make it through the school year it s heart breaking to think a 10 year old boy who haven’t been able to live his life yet would cut it short because kids made him change the way he saw him self from a “label”. Now his mother will also has to live the rest of her life after finding her baby boy hung, it’s heartbreaking. After Sevens death he marked the 8th suicide this school year from his school district. I think people need to learn how far labeling can go it can destroy a person or take them to a mental break down it is something people should teach so it hopefully happens less because no 10 year old boy should want to take his own life because somebody drilled in his head that he was an outcast.

Chapter 3&4

Compare: I chose to talk about a Taboo which was from our chapter three. The Taboo definition was “A norm ingrained so deeply that even thinking about violating it evokes strong feelings of disgust.” and i can relate to that when the subject of eating insects is brought up. Since we were little we were told “no, gross, don’t touch them” talking about bugs. That makes us grow and believe there gross, and not to be messed around with, like i still do today. But many people in Asian countries are starting to change their beliefs. There has been many studies recently about how much healthier bugs are and how there so little calories but, a lot of protein. I feel eventually this taboo is going to be overturned and become a part of people’s diets (most likely not mine). Because as the world population is rising so is the need of food, and there are so many insects they would be an easy source.

Article Summary: This Article talks about how people should be adding insects to their diet, This is for many reasons, like they let out less greenhouse gases and ammonia than cattle or pigs and require less land for rearing they also have less breeding time so we would be able to make mass quantities in small amounts of time. The insects also feed on waste and would help clean up and cause less contamination to the earth. As of right now insects are a big part of two millions people’s diets. In Southeast Asia there is around 200 species of insects being cooked and served regularly for people today. And in Congo caterpillars are a huge part of their diet as they explain it has a “fruity nutty flavor”. “One household, in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, eats about 300 g of caterpillars a week on average. This equates to an astonishing 96 tonnes of caterpillars consumed in the city annually.” That is a lot of bugs, but it works for their diet.

chapter 1&2

Compare: For my current event I chose to talk about Donald Trump wanting to build the border wall. I think it fits well with the subject we talked about in class “Macrosociology”. I think they fit well together since macrosociology is the study of a large scale social structure and studying how something like a change can affect the lives of the groups and individuals in the society. The wall President Donald Trump would like to build on the border would tie into this because once the wall is built it will be affecting all of the lives of of the people that  our trying to get into the United States. This wall is trying to be passed by the President and it is going to be affecting individuals and groups of people who are wanting to come start fresh in the US. The Macrosociology is coming in to this current event when it starts affecting the lives of others. It has also affected people when the government shut down due to the wall funding costing to much. When the government shut down so did the national parks which affected peoples lives and jobs. This shows how one thing can affect so many people by one change in our society.

Summary: This article talks about how Trump is planning on putting a wall on the border of the United states and Mexico. This wall is supposed to keep immigrants from coming in illegally, the idea has been passed but now Donald Trump is struggling to find the money to support the wall. This project could be potentially wasting billions of dollars and he wants to use it from the congress. The cost of this would be so much due to rough terrain and building ground. It also talks about how Trump has talked about shutting down the government if Congress does not provide funding for the wall. Since the government shutdown so did national parks which is affecting people who use them or work as park rangers.
